ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction. Xerophilic microorganisms have become more relevant for conducting research related to their adaptive mechanisms against water stress, as well as the characterization and identification of their habitats. In Colombia, semi-arid and desert areas such as the Tatacoa desert have been little studied at the microbial level. Objective. Isolation and characterization of cultivable xerophilic microorganisms from the soil of the semi-arid zone of Tatacoa, in the department of Huila (Colombia). Material and methods. For this, samples were collected in the sectors locally called Cuzco and La Victoria, which were processed for the isolation of xerophilic microorganisms in selective M40Y medium for subsequent macro and microscopic characterization, as well as evaluation by biochemical tests for the use of substrates. Results. 29 morphotypes were isolated among which it was possible to differentiate: Gram-positive bacilli and cocci present exclusively in the Cuzco sector and branched filamentous bacteria (Actinobacteria) only in the La Victoria sector. The presence of the genera Streptomyces, Micrococcus and Corynebacterium was established. Conclusions. The presence of microorganisms related to the mentioned genera will allow us to understand the possible interactions that occur in this ecosystem, which will contribute to the development of this place as a possible analogue of studies for the search for life on other planets such as Mars. In addition, promote more detailed studies where microorganisms that are useful for different biotechnological processes can be recovered.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to estimate the stability and adaptability parameters in upright-peanut genotypes, based on pod and seed yield, through EBERHART & RUSSELL (1966), WRICKE (1965) and LIN & BINNS (1988) methodologies. The genotypes were evaluated in 14 environments located in Northeast and Midwest regions, during 2006 to 2011, in a randomized blocks design, with five replications. EBERHART & RUSSELL (1966) and LIN & BINNS (1988) methodologies revealed similar results, identifying genotypes with high adaptability and stability to pod and seed yield. The BRS 151 L7 and L7 Bege were the most productive, revealing specific adaptability to favorable environment, while CNPA 280 AM revealed broad adaptability and high phenotypical stability.

ABSTRACT

Interpopulation reproductive synchrony of Agave cocui (Agavaceae) in Venezuela. Agave cocui (Agavaceae) is a species with broad distribution in arid and semiarid areas of Venezuela and Colombia. Despite of its ecological importance as a source of food for wildlife, and its economic value for production of a spirit drink, studies on the reproductive ecology of the species are relatively rare. In this study, we conducted a oneyear evaluation of the flowering and fruiting phenology of A. cocui in the eight representative localities of the species’ distribution in Venezuela. Within each study site, we chose an area with a minimum of 50 reproductive individuals and followed their reproductive phenophases with the help of binoculars, using six qualitative cathegories (emerging reproductive stalk, flowers, inmature fruits, mature fruits, bulbils and dry stalk) every two months. Emergence of the reproductive stalk in most of the examined populations began in September (rainy season), although this event delayed two months in a few populations. We detected significant negative correlations between precipitation and the percentage of flowering occurrence in four of the eight populations. Floral resources are available for flower visitors during approximately five months of the year (January-May). In most populations production of flowers initiated in January (dry season), and for Western Venezuela and Andean regions, the flowering main peak occurred in January. Localities from the Central and Eastern Coast exhibited the flowering peak in March, showing a delay of approximately two months with respect to other populations. Beginning of fruit set varied among localities from January to May; however, peak production of mature fruits concentrated in May, and fruit occurrence varied broadly between 5.2 and 85%. Bulbil production was detected in all populations and varied greatly among them (maximum percentage per population: 26.19-92.10%). High flowering synchronicity (Phenophase Overlapping Index: 0.756 and 0.999) was observed among all populations monitored in Western Venezuela, including the Andean localities. This condition might facilitate the existence of a nectar corridor from the Western Coast and nearby islands, to the Andean arid patches, which could be potentially used by nectar-feeding bats and birds dependent on agave flowers during part of the year. cocui (Agavaceae) es una especie de amplia distribución en zonas áridas y semiáridas de Venezuela y Colombia.

ABSTRACT

Arid zone of Rajasthan, India, has its own importance, great diversity and specific characteristic with respect to endemic and large number of plants of economic importance and medicinal use. Out of these, three arid zone plants Gisekia pharnaceoides L., Gisekiaceae, Sericostoma pauciflorum Stocks ex Wight, Boraginaceae, and Trianthema decandra L., Aizoaceae, which are traditionally used for different ailments (hepatitis, asthma, jaundice, skin-infections etc.) have been selected for the study. In the present paper, detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of these plant species using microscopy, standard physicochemical determinations and authentic phytochemical parameters has been carried out. Later, these morphological characteristics could be used for rapid identification of the drugs, particularly in case of powdered materials, and may possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other species.

ABSTRACT

Under certain environmental conditions, several species of grasshoppers inhabiting rangeland areas (e.g., inter-valleys) of the Chilean transitional desert can irrupt demographically. One of them is Elasmoderus wagenknechti (Liebermann), an endemic species. We studied two outbreaks occurred in 1996 and 1999. The objectives of the research were to (i) estimate some demographic parameters associated with the aforementioned events, and (ii) compare between them the population parameters. The parameters we studied were density (ind/m²), sexual proportion, female fertility (i.e., eggs/female), and the relationship eggs/female versus female size. Density (ind/m²) ranged from 0.2 to 0.4 in 1996 and from 0.5 to 0.6 in 1999. ANOVA-tests registered differences in density among study sites and between years. In some of the study sites, females were more abundant than males (e.g., Lomas del Sauce). Females fertility ranged from 27 to 39 eggs per female, with significant differences among sites in 1996 but not in 1999. For females of 30-50 mm body size, a linear relationship was detected between egg number/female and body size. It is concluded that the E. wagenknechti outbreaks are site-specific in the study area and that the demographic parameters examined show a high variability among sites and between events.
